Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Simply get in touch via the contact form or email to let me know what you're hoping to discover. I’ll get back to you to discuss the right package or service for your needs, and we’ll agree the scope before any work begins.

What information do you need from me?

At minimum, I’ll need:

  • The name(s) of the person or family you’d like to research

  • Any known birth/marriage/death details

  • What you already know (a tree, GEDCOM file, or notes are welcome!)
The more accurate starting info you can share, the more efficient and focused the research can be.

When do I pay?

For most packages, a 50% deposit is required before research begins, with the balance due on completion. For hourly/bespoke work, we’ll agree the estimated time and costs up front. No surprise fees — I’ll always check before ordering certificates or incurring any extras.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the package and availability of records. As a guide:

  • Single surname packages: approx. 4-6 weeks

  • Double surname/full tree packages: approx. 6–10 weeks

  • Bespoke projects vary depending on complexity
I’ll give you an estimated timeline at the start, and keep you updated along the way.

What will I receive?

You’ll receive:

  • A fully sourced family tree, either shared via an online tree (Ancestry) or as a GEDCOM file

  • Copies of all supporting documents (where available)

  • Optional: a detailed PDF report, printed version, or digital album depending on your package
Your project will be delivered in a format you can keep, revisit, and share.

Do you only research Gloucestershire families?

Not at all! While I’m based in the Cotswolds and can visit Gloucestershire archives, I research families from all over the UK and have experience with ancestry across England, & Wales. I can also work with international clients exploring UK roots.

How is my information handled?

All personal data and research materials are treated with complete confidentiality and stored securely. I am in the process of registering with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) for full compliance and take your privacy seriously.

Can you help with DNA results?

Yes! I’ve helped many people interpret DNA results, identify biological lines, and break through mystery parentage or “brick wall” situations. If you’ve tested with Ancestry,MyHeritage, 23andMe or another service, I can help make sense of your matches and build your tree around them.
